You must have often heard of this saying “Always Let Your Boss Have The First Say.” But what exactly does this mean? To understand this better, there is a little story told.

THE STORY-

Once, there was a manager along with his assistant and his sales representative. It was lunchtime, and they were taking a walk outside. On the way, they found a little antique oil lamp. The three of them picked up the oil lamp and rubbed it, and a genie came out of it.

The genie then said to the three people that he would grant each of them one wish. Listening to the genie, the assistant said instantly that she wanted to go first among them. The assistant wished that she wanted a vacation. The vacation would be a visit to the Bahamas. She wanted to experience driving a speedboat there, and have a carefree vacation in the Bahamas.

As soon as the assistant described her wish, the genie instantly granted her exactly what she had asked for. She disappeared right in front of the others and reached the Bahamas.

The sales representative wanted to have a go next. He wished to go to Hawaii. There he wanted to spend a relaxing time on the beach of Hawaii. Not only that, but he also fancied a personal masseuse and a large supply of piña coladas. He also wished to have the love of his life with him in Hawaii.

No sooner did the sales representative express his wish, than the genie granted him his wish. The sales representative found himself in Hawaii, with everything that he asked for.

Lastly, it was the manager’s turn to ask for a wish. That genie asked the manager to tell him what he desired. The manager simply told the genie that he wanted his assistant and his sales representative back in the office after lunchtime was over.

As soon as lunchtime was over, the assistant and the sales representative found themselves back in reality and in their office, continuing from where they left off before the break.

LEARNING-

From this story, we learn that “Always Let Your Boss Have The First Say.” If the assistant and the sales representative had let their manager wish before them, they could have utilized their chance in a much better way. Now, not only did their vacation get short, they will very soon be back in their office, abandoning their desired vacation.

The moral of the story is that if the manager had the first chance, the assistant and the sales representative could have done their work as well as enjoyed a very much desired vacation. But what they did instead grabbed the chance for the first say and ruined their own wish.

Managing work and enjoying time are both very important, so this lesson gives a very important lesson on how a person can balance both, by simply letting the “Boss Have The First Say.”
